Many urban poor lesbians, bisexuals and trans men (LBTs)

work in the informal economy where there are no social protection policies to speak of.*

Others who obtain jobs in the formal sector remit mandatory monthly contributions to public insurance companies even if heteronormative biases in the law prevent their same-sex partners from benefiting from the same protections heterosexual spouses enjoy.*

Schools impose rigid gender norms

on students in a variety of ways—for example, through gendered uniforms or dress codes, restrictions on hair length, gendered restrooms, classes and activities that differ for boys and girls, and close scrutiny of same-sex friendships and relationships.

…discrimination made it difficult to concentrate on the material or participate in class, or caused them to skip classes, take a leave of absence, or drop out entirely.*

What we're here for:

1) Provide free haircut lessons and barber supplies to out-of-school trans and queer youth. This will help them to learn a new skill and potentially start their own business.

2) Raise awareness about the importance of entrepreneurship for trans and queer youth. Entrepreneurship can be a great way for trans and queer youth to build financial independence and create a better future for themselves. By raising awareness about the importance of entrepreneurship, we can help more trans and queer youth pursue this path.

3) Create a safe and supportive space for trans and queer youth to learn about hair care. This is important because many trans and queer youth may feel uncomfortable or unsafe in traditional hair care settings. By creating a safe and supportive space for them, we can help them to feel more comfortable learning about hair care and to develop their skills in this area.

4) Connect trans and queer youth with barbers and other professionals in the hair care industry. This can help them to build relationships with people who can offer them support and guidance as they learn about hair care. It can also help them to network with professionals in the hair care industry, which could lead to future employment opportunities.
